Description:

In 1987, Dr. Claire Panosian Dunavan created UCLA’s first-ever Travel and Tropical Medicine clinic. Soon, the Clinic was attracting patients, US- and foreign-born, with everything from traveler’s diarrhea to exotic parasitic blights. In her second career as a medical journalist, Dr. Dunavan shared some of her patients’ stories in the pages of the Los Angeles Times, New York Times and Discover magazine. Her goal? To shine a light on “dual-burden” infections that occasionally afflict travelers at the same time they impose a far greater burden on the global poor. This lecture will share stories and facts about five such tropical diseases, starting with malaria.
